Understanding Self-harm for Professionals
24th November 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
This workshop aims to get any professional who works with children, young people or their families thinking about the issue of self-harm. Held within a safe, relaxed forum, the workshop will give you a chance to share and explore your thoughts, responses and feelings about this often emotive topic. Through group work you will develop your understanding about what self-harm is, and why someone may be self-harming. We will also explore how people hurt themselves and what signs might indicate that someone is self-harming. It will also cover how to have that first conversation with someone you think may be self-harming. The limits within our role as professionals in dealing with this behaviour will be discussed openly as a group, and by the end of the workshop it is hoped that you will have a greater understanding of self-harm and the issues around it, and feel more confident in supporting someone who is self-harming.
The workshop covers six main areas, including:
- What is self harm?
- How do people self harm?
- Why do people do it?
- Indications and signs to look out for
- How to help
- Appropriate support / next steps
The workshop aims to help you:
- Increase understanding of self-harm
- Identify signs that someone may be self-harming
- Make that first conversation with someone who may be self-harming
- Know where to go for more help
